Different Lifestyle’s Around Rowan

Posted by koloj33 on December 9, 2008

rowan-sign2Alright, the end of the semester has finally come, which means final projects as well.  It took me a little while to think of a topic, but I’ve decided to compare different types of lifestyles of the Rowan University student body.  Although I am not a member of a fraternity, I interviewed members of the Phi Sigma Sigma Sorority and the Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity.  I also talked to many Rowan students who are not in fraternities or sororites, and I will also be using personal insight to explain what it’s like to be like the majority of the student body, and how the lifestyle at Rowan differs from those in fraternities and sororities.  Read the rest of this entry »

Finals week/Advice for studying

Posted by koloj33 on December 5, 2008

As all of you know, finals week is coming up awfully fast.  Because of this, there are not too many more activities for the remainder of the semester.  This is can be considered both a good and bad thing.  It is a good thing because it means the semester is coming to an end, and winter break is just around the corner.  It is a bad thing because before the winter break, unfortunately there still are finals.  Even though finals are every college students worst nightmare, I have some tips that will help students to do better on their exams with less effort.

First, it’s very helpful to study a little bit frequently, as opposed to waiting until the night before and cramming.  It’s a lot easier to retain information when you are relaxed, as opposed to being in a hurry, tired, or angry.  If you study little amounts at a time frequently, it helps to prevent you from becoming tired or angry while studying.

Second, create a study routine.  It’s proven that if you are used to a certain routine of studying, you will do better than if you study at random times.  It’s also very helpful to review the information the day of the test, just to keep it fresh in your mind.

Third, and most important, when you study, you will get frustrated, there’s no avoiding it.  You need to do whatever you can to prepare yourself for it.  You need to realize that the frustration is going to come, and you need to realize that you need to ignore it in order to study better.

Hopefully, this will help you to do better on your finals.  Best of luck to all of you.

SGA Information – Q&A

Posted by koloj33 on November 21, 2008

If any of you readers are interested in information about SGA, you have come to the right place.  I talked to Junior Class Senator, Hilary Scacchetti, to gain information about the topic.

Q:  How long have you been a member of SGA?

A:  About three months, I started sometime during mid-to-late September.

Q:  Overall, how do you like it?

A:  I absolutely love it.  All of the meetings are so much fun, and so funny.  It’s cool because although we have fun, we still get work done.

Q:  Is there anything you don’t like?

A:  Honestly, no.  It’s a great way to stay involved with the school and still have fun at the same time.

Q:  How did you gain a position in SGA?

A:  Usually you run for a position that you’d like in a school-wide election, but there are other options, too.  You can sometimes write a resume, and hand it in to Phil Castro.

Q:  What are the positions held?

A:  All the positions that are available in any normal government, President, Vice President, Senators, Treasury, Special Event’s coordinator’s, pretty much what you would expect.

Q:  How many members are there in SGA?

A:  I’m not too sure, it differs from grade to grade, maybe 100?

Q:  Is it completely student run?

A:  Well, we do have advisors, but they pretty much let us run the show.  They’ll give us advice and try to help as good advisors would, but the students do mostly everything in the longrun.  We like it better that way too, it gives us more responsibility, more reward type of a thing.

Q:  Lastly, do you recommend it to people who are interested in joining?

A:  Yes, definately.  Like I said before, it’s a great way to stay involved with the school, and have fun while doing it.  I highly recommend it to anyone who thinks they might be interested, it’s worth a shot.

December Movies

Posted by koloj33 on November 21, 2008

Due to the fact that the month of December is a short one for Rowan students, there are only two movies being shown this month.  However, they are both movies worth seeing.  Although, in my opinion, almost any movie for 50 cents on a Wednesday night is worth seeing.

Both movies start at 9:00pm, and are located in the Student Center Ballroom.  Also, free, thats right, FREE popcorn, drinks, snacks, and prizes will be given.

The first of the two movies is being shown on Wednesday, November 3rd, and is Hamlet II.  In this comedy, Steve Coogan, Catherine Keener, Amy Poehler, and David Arquette lead a hysterical cast that will guarantee to have you holding your stomach, trying to catch your breath from laughter.

The second movie being shown is “Righteous Kill”, and is being shown on Wednesday, November 10th.  This movie stars Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino, and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson.  It is a crime/drama/mystery that is action packed and guarunteed to keep you on the edge of your seat.

With finals and winter break coming up, this is the last opportunity to catch some movies in the Student Center Ballroom this semester.  I said it before and I’ll say it again, it’s a bargain, and a great way to clear your mind and get relaxed before finals week begins.

Speaking of relaxing before finals week, on Monday, December 8th, in the Student Center Pit, there will be free massages.  Sign-ups and massages will take place during 10am-2pm.  Enjoy.

December Bus Trips

Posted by koloj33 on November 21, 2008

Although December is going to be a short month for Rowan students, considering break starts the fourth week into the month, there are still three bus trips that are all worth going on.

The first of the trips takes place on Saturday, December 6th, and will be a trip headed to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to see a live performance of “Legally Blonde”.  The show will be held at Philadelphia’s Forrest Theatre, and will cost $30.  The cost includes transportation and admission to the show.  The trip will take place from 12:00pm until 6:30pm.  Definately a good idea for anyone who’s a fan of the movie, or just live performances in general.

The second trip takes place on Sunday, December 7th, and is a trip to Longwood Gardens, which is located in Kennet Square, Pennsylvania.  Longwood Gardens is a huge garden consiting of light shows, christmas trees, and gorgeous scenery in every direction.  The trip takes place from 3pm until 6pm, and only costs ten dollars.  Definately a great way to set the mood for the upcoming holidays.

The third trip takes place on Sunday, December 14th, and is a shuttle bus to Deptford, New Jersey.  Here, students will be able to spend the day at the Deptford Mall, eat at one of many restaurants, or check out many other stores nearby, all for no cost at all.  Good idea for anyone who feels the need to get away from campus for an afternoon.

Enjoy.

Battle of the Bands

Posted by koloj33 on November 14, 2008

November has been a great month so far for Rowan University students, filled with Bus Trips, concerts, celebrities, comedians, and plenty of fun events every day.  However, all good things must come to an end.  The last event of the month takes place two days before my second favorite holiday, Thanksgiving.

On Tuesday, November 25th, Rowan University will be hosting a Battle of the Bands competition.  The show starts at 6pm and ends at 12am, and will take place in the Student Center Pit.  Come out and support your school’s top bands as they compete against eachother.

What’s I think is really cool about this competition, is that the winning band of the competition get’s to play their own show in the Student Center Pit, exactly one week after the Battle of the Bands competition.  On Tuesday, December 2nd, is when the winning band will get the opportunity to play their own full show, which is an awesome prize.  I highly recommend that any music lovers attend both events.

If you are a music lover like myself, this is a perfect combination.  The first night of music, you get to watch numerous bands compete against eachother, and hear ton’s of different styles of music.  The following week, you will get to see another concert of the best out of the bands that played the week before.  The best part about it is that it’s free to all Rowan students.  Definately an awesome event, and almost guaranteed to be great time.

Rowan Alert = Must Have

Posted by koloj33 on November 14, 2008

As all of you know, there were some incidents regarding students getting jumped, pistol whipped, and robbed on and around Rowan’s campus earlier this week.  One of the incidents took place in the off campus apartment’s known as Campus Crossings, while the other one took place over by the dorm rooms on campus.  I’m sure that the security and police in the area are doing anything that they can to try to prevent incidents like these from happening again, but to be safe, all students should definately sign up for the “Rowan Alert.”

Rowan Alert is a system in which students, in case of an emergency, recieve either e-mails, text messages, phone calls, or all three, it’s up to the student.  The text/e-mail/phone call informs students when there bad incidents on or around campus.  It informs students about what has happened, and will inform students to stay inside their apartment/dorm/house when necessary.

This is a very good idea from Rowan, because it informs students as soon as they find out.  This is also very helpful to avoid incidents like that of Virginia Tech, in April of 2007.  Some of the Virginia Tech students had no idea that anything was happening, and actually attempted to go to class, having no idea that there was a crazed gunman on the loose.  Had the students have had a system such as Rowan Alert, danger could have been easily avoided.

It’s very easy to sign up for, too.  All you need to do is go to the Rowan website, click on the current students link on the left side of the screen, and click the link that says “Rowan Alert Sign-Up.”  From there on it is self explanatory.  It only takes about a minute to complete, so if you are not already signed up, do it ASAP.  Rowan Alert is a great thing, and a must have for all students that attend Rowan.

Flobots coming to Rowan

Posted by koloj33 on November 7, 2008

The new very popular band among college students, “The Flobots”, are playing a concert at Rowan.  The concert takes place on Saturday, November 8th, in the Student Center Pit.  Tickets are free with your Rowan ID card, and the show starts at 9pm.

This is actually very impressive that Rowan was able to book the Flobots for a free concert.  Recently, the Flobots had a concert at the “Electric Factory”, which is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and the concert sold out extremely quick.  The Flobots have a very unique style of music.  They mix Rap and Hip Hop with rock for a very cool sound.  So far this year, and as of right now, the Flobots are the biggest musical performance that Rowan has had, and will be hosting all semester.

It should be a very energetic and pumped up crowd at the concert as well, seeing as the Flobots hit single, “Handlebars” is one of the biggest songs on college campuses nation wide.  I can almost guarantee that more than half of the students attending will be going strictly to hear that one song.

To sum everything up, pretty much one of the most popular college bands in America, with one of the top hit singles in America, is going to be playing a free concert at Rowan.  Definately an awesome way to have a fun Saturday night.

Women’s Soccer on Fire

Posted by koloj33 on November 7, 2008

The Rowan University women’s soccer team is having one of their best seasons ever. They finished their regular season with a record of 13-0-2, and a record of 7-0-2 in their conference, the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC). This remarkable season has given them the 2nd seed in the NJAC tournament, and has given them a first round bye.

They played their first match of the tournament against the number three seed, The College of New Jersey, on Wednesday, November 5th. They won the semi-final match by a score of 3-1. Their next game is against the #1 seed in the NJAC tournament, Richard Stockton College, and that game is the championship of the tournament. The game will be played at Stockton, which is located in Pomona, NJ, at 1pm on Saturday.

Although i’m sure that most of you reading this don’t have a car around campus, I highly recommend that you find a way to go support your fellow Profs. It’s less than an hour away from Rowan, and I’m sure there’s some way you will be able to find a ride. I’ve been to a few of the women’s soccer games this season, and each one was definately very exciting and full of energy. I can’t even imagine the intensity that the players must be feeling. This is a very big rivarly, and it will most definately be a game to remember.

Go Profs.
